John Fell loves his family and gourmet cooking, and feels appropriately tormented by Keats, his rich girlfriend from the right side of the tracks. A normal life - normal, that is, until he meets Woodrow Pingree one night by ramming into the back of his Mitsubishi. Suddenly nothing will be the same. A poor boy is now a rich one at an exclusive prep school. A woman who's no longer a girl enters Fell's life with long kisses and no promises. He's paid to be someone he's not with a name that's no longer his own. ''Your fate is already set; just lean into it,'' Fell is told. Only don't fall, Fell... don't fall.
Fell is a love story and a suspense story - the first in a series by M.E. Kerr. A strange incident on the night of the senior prom changes John Fell's entire life, leading him to enroll in an exclusive private school under an assumed name.

The description is fairly accurate, and I won't add to that to spoil the story. If anything, I wish there was a bit more story, but since I know this is supposed to be one in a series, it's off to a good start. The characters in the book are quite creative in that they are unique and quirky. You get drawn into them. Even the mysterious Fern, there's a desire to know more about her story. There were times it seemed a bit over the top such as how Ping is almost childlike, wondering if he had some developmental delays, causing the rest of the story to fall in place. There is a sense of suspended disbelief in order to really buy into how the private school came about for Fell. And I found Fell's rich girlfriend to be irritating, not really seeing how Fell was so drawn into her. Despite some of his mannerisms, Fell is quite easy to relate to in his view on the world and his response to the situations going on around him. You feel bad for him at times and root him on at other times. My main critique would be that the end of the story wrapped up a little too quickly. One minute you're reading about not getting a phone call, and next thing you know, it all concludes in a very clean manner, leaving you wanting just a bit more to the ending. Hoping that the others will live up to this standard.
And for those of you looking at this book for a teenager, there is some talk of intimacy, basically references to scenes that are not included in the book. There are short clips about who is a virgin, as well as a short reference to a teen going for his sexual initiation.

Fell (Audible Audio Edition) M E Kerr Ray Chase Audible Studios Books Reviews
When M.E. Kerr first moved from New York City to the Hamptons she bought a house next door to a policeman and his family. That experience, with the Captain and
his kids inspired what was planned as a detective series, with her
neighbors as principals in the stories. The detective was patterned after their
teenage son. She did three books in between other Kerrs, and was thinking about doing her fourth, untitled, when her editor said, "Fell is not exactly falling off the shelves,". Sadly (because Kerr liked writing the stories) Fell was
over then and there, and Kerr never did another YA suspense.
ok
It is a nice quick read. A little different from the type of books I usually read. But I throughly enjoyed it.
I believe this is a YA story, but this adult found it engrossing. There is good character development, tho some details seem unncessary, I assume they are there because it lays groundwork for the rest of the series. The main character did seem a little too "together" to be a teenager. I would expect more missteps and awkwardness, even in the late teens.
Sadly, the kindle edition is a sloppy scan job which was unread by human eyes before it was submitted to the kindle store. No book I pay real money for should look this bad. There are the usual misreading of letters, plus random uppercase letters, and random line breaks.
